After The Chew Table (Sampling The Chew Dishes)

Carla's Crispy Onion Rings
We Put Carla's Onion Rings to the Test!

These crispy, crunchy treats would be good as a side dish or as the main feature snack.
For around the same price as a couple of a couple of large fries from any burger joint, you can have several helpings of these onion rings. I had the majority of the items needed in my pantry already. The additional items purchased were the potato flakes and club soda, which ran a whopping $6. If all the items in the recipe had been purchased this would have roughly come to an additional $20 but most of those ingredients, (being seasonings), would be available to you for months to come for other dishes.
Meal Review
I started off by warming my oil and slicing up 3 onions. The recipe is pretty straight forward and easy. The club soda foamed up as it went into the wet mixture, so I imagined this was going to make the final product very flaky. The onions were dipped in flour and then into my wet mixture and put directly in the oil.
Meal Challenge
I had a few challenges. I sent hubby to the store for my ingredients and only half of my list made it to my kitchen, the Japanese breadcrumbs didn't make the trip. So to improvise I used twice the amount of potato flakes that the recipe called for. As I put the rings into the wet mixture I found that it as was a little "goopy" and I had trouble getting it to adhere to the rings. This may very well have been because I was missing that major ingredient in the breadcrumbs. I also had a really hard time because as I was suppose to be cutting onions, instead I took a hunk out of my finger. Some four hours after meal's end, I'm still bleeding. Note to self, stinging eyes from onions and stinging fingers from cook with loose grip while holding sharp knife, not a good combo.

Complete Dish
The onion rings came out golden brown, very crunchy (even with a missing ingredient), and very tasty. The breading didn't need much added to it, just a sprinkle of salt and I was good to go. After a dip in some ketchup, the rings tasted possibly better than I've had in a restaurant.
